عَمَِّ 1495 عَبَسَ
َ وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبِيهِ ﴿۳۵﴾ وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَبَنِيهِ ﴿۳۶﴾ لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ ﴿۳۷﴾ وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُسْفِرَةٌ ﴿۳۸﴾ ضَاحِكَةٌ مُسْتَبْشِرَةٌ ﴿۳۹﴾ وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ ﴿۴۰﴾ تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ ﴿۴۱﴾ أُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْكَفَرَةُ الْفَجَرَةُ ﴿۴۲﴾
﴾35﴿ Wa ummihee wa abeeh
﴾36﴿ Wa sahi batihee wa baneeh.
﴾37﴿ Likul limri-im-minhum yawmaa-izin shaa nuy-yughneeh
﴾38﴿ Wujoo huny-yauma-izim-musfira;
﴾39﴿ Dahi katum mustab shirah
﴾40﴿ Wa wujoohuy yauma-izin 'alaiha ghabar a
﴾41﴿ Tarhaquha qatarah.
﴾42﴿ Ulaa-ika humul-kafa ratul-fajarah.
﴾35﴿ And from his mother and his father
﴾36﴿ And from his wife and his children
﴾37﴿ For every man among them on that Day, there will be a concern occupying him
﴾38﴿ Some faces on that Day will be radiant
﴾39﴿ Laughing, rejoicing in gladness
﴾40﴿ And some faces on that Day will have dust upon them
﴾41﴿ And darkness will cover them
﴾42﴿ These are the disbelievers, the wicked ones
[38,39] On the Day of Judgment, people will be divided into two groups.
In these verses, glad tidings are given to the first group.
(مُسْفِرَةٌ) — means radiant with light, and one of the reasons for this is performing wudu (ablution) in the best manner, as mentioned in an authentic hadith.
It is also referenced in Surah Aal Imran (3:106).
(مُسْتَبْشِرَةٌ) — means that signs of joy will be visible on the skin of their faces.
[40,41,42] In this passage, it describes those whose traits were mentioned earlier in Surah An-Nāzi‘āt under “As for him who transgressed”. For them, there is a warning of the Hereafter.
(عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ) — this is the opposite of musfira (radiant).
(قَتَرَةٌ) — refers to darkness, where dust and blackness cover the face, making it appear extremely repulsive. Another view is that qatarah also means dust, but specifically the kind that rises from the earth to the sky, while ghabarah is the dust that descends from above to the ground — meaning both types of dust will fall upon them.
(الْكَفَرَةُ الْفَجَرَةُ) — meaning they are disbelievers in belief (kufr) and immoral in actions (fujūr).
Just as they combined disbelief and wickedness, in their punishment too, ghabarah and qatarah are combined.
