عَمَِّ 1490 َاَلنَّازِعَات

َ وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَى ﴿۴۰﴾ فَإِنَّ الْجَنَّةَ هِيَ الْمَأْوَى ﴿۴۱﴾ يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ السَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرْسَاهَا ﴿۴۲﴾ فِيمَ أَنْتَ مِنْ ذِكْرَاهَا ﴿۴۳﴾ إِلَى رَبِّكَ مُنْتَهَاهَا ﴿۴۴﴾ إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مُنْذِرُ مَنْ يَخْشَاهَا ﴿۴۵﴾ كَأَنَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَهَا لَمْ يَلْبَثُوا إِلَّا عَشِيَّةً أَوْ ضُحَاهَا ﴿۴۶﴾

﴾40﴿ Wa ammaa man khaafa maqaama Rabbihee wa nahan nafsa 'anil hawaa
﴾41﴿ Fa innal jannata hiyal ma'waa
﴾42﴿ Yas'aloonaka 'anis saa'ati ayyaana mursaahaa
﴾43﴿ Feema anta min zikraahaa
﴾44﴿ Ilaa Rabbika muntahaa haa
﴾45﴿ Innamaaa anta munziru maiy yakshaahaa
﴾46﴿ Ka annahum Yawma yarawnahaa lam yalbasooo illaa 'ashiyyatan aw duhaahaa

﴾40﴿ But as for the one who feared standing before his Lord and restrained his soul from desire
﴾41﴿ Then surely Paradise will be his abode
﴾42﴿ They ask you about the Hour (the Day of Judgment), saying, When will its arrival be
﴾43﴿ What concern do you have with mentioning it
﴾44﴿ Its knowledge rests solely with your Lord
﴾45﴿ Surely, you are only a warner to those who fear the Day of Judgment
﴾46﴿ On the day they see the Resurrection, it will be as if they had not stayed (in the world) except for an afternoon or a morning

[40,41] This is the glad tidings for the second group. (مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ) — standing before the Lord on the Day of Reckoning, or it could mean in this world — that is, when about to commit a sin, he fears standing before the Lord and thus refrains from the sin. Or the standing of the Lord means His knowledge and power over the creation — that is, he fears that Allah the Exalted is present over me and is capable, so he guards himself from sins. (وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَى) — this is the result linked to the cause, meaning that fear leads to refraining from sins — that is, preventing the evil-commanding soul from following desires, even from entertaining or intending them. Sahl al-Tustari said: “Abandoning desire is the key to Paradise, so following desire is the key to sins.”
[42] This is a rebuke for denying the Resurrection after the description of its conditions.
[44,45] (إِلَى رَبِّكَ) — meaning, when someone asks about the Resurrection, the matter is referred to Allah the Exalted, and its knowledge is exclusive to Him, as mentioned in Surah Fussilat (41:47) and Surah Al-A‘raf (7:187). (إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مُنْذِرُ) — the role of a warner is fulfilled simply by conveying the coming of the Resurrection with sufficient proofs, and knowing the exact time is not necessary for a warner. (مَنْ يَخْشَاهَا) — this specification is due to the fact that the benefit of warning is received only by those who have fear (of it), as in Surah Yasin (36:11).
[46] This is a response from another angle — meaning, they ask about the Resurrection because the lifespan of the world appears to them extremely long. But when they see the Resurrection, they will conclude that the life of the world was only half a day. (عَشِيَّةً) refers to the time from afternoon until sunset.
(أَوْ ضُحَاهَا) — Ḍuḥā is a portion of the day, from sunrise until noon.
