َ وَأَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ فَإِنْ تَوَلَّيْتُمْ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَى رَسُولِنَا الْبَلَاغُ الْمُبِينُ ﴿۱۲﴾ اللَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ ﴿۱۳﴾ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنَّ مِنْ أَزْوَاجِكُمْ وَأَوْلَادِكُمْ عَدُوًّا لَكُمْ فَاحْذَرُوهُمْ وَإِنْ تَعْفُوا وَتَصْفَحُوا وَتَغْفِرُوا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ ﴿۱۴﴾
﴾12﴿ Wa atee'ul laaha wa atee'ur Rasool; fa in tawallaitum fa innamaa 'alaa Rasoolinal balaaghul mubeen
﴾13﴿ Allaahu laaa ilaaha illaa Hoo; wa 'alal laahi falyata wakkalil mu'minoon
﴾14﴿ Yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanooo inna min azwaaji kum wa awlaadikum 'aduwwal lakum fahzaroohum; wa in ta'foo wa tasfahoo wa taghfiroo fa innal laaha ghafoorur Raheem
﴾12﴿ And obey Allah and obey the Messenger, but if you turn away, then upon Our Messenger is only the clear conveyance
﴾13﴿ Allah—there is no deity except Him, and upon Allah alone should the believers rely
﴾14﴿ O believers! Indeed, some of your spouses and children are enemies to you, so beware of them. But if you pardon, overlook, and forgive, then surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful
[12] It means: make hardships easier upon yourselves by believing in divine decree, obeying Allah, the Exalted, and obeying His Messenger. Do not abandon obedience because of hardships. Ibn Kathir narrates from Imam al-Zuhri: from Allah is the sending of the message, from the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace) is the conveying of it, and from us is submission.
[13] This is a declaration of monotheism, and likewise, reliance upon Allah, the Exalted, is essential for warding off hardships. Ibn Kathir said that in the first phrase, there is an implied meaning of seeking—that is, devote sincerity to Allah, the Exalted, by abandoning every form of shirk (association with Him).
[14] It mentioned the remedy for one obstacle to obeying Allah and His Messenger—which is hardships—and now it mentions another obstacle: spouses and children. (إِنَّ مِنْ أَزْوَاجِكُمْ)—the word min (from) indicates that this enmity comes from some of them. (عَدُوًّا لَكُمْ)—this refers to enmity in a religious and hereafter-related sense, or it is by way of analogy, meaning they are like enemies. This enmity lies in preventing one from migration, following the Sunnah in both hardship and ease, and encouraging innovations, customs, and worldly distractions. (فَاحْذَرُوهُمْ)—meaning, in matters of religion, guard yourselves against their whispers and obeying them. (وَإِنْ تَعْفُوا وَتَصْفَحُوا)—this teaches good character to prevent domestic discord.
