﴾11﴿ Wa lany yu 'akhkhiral laahu nafsan izaa jaaa'a ajaluhaa; wallaahu khabeerum bimaa ta'maloon
﴾9﴿ O believers, do not let your wealth or your children distract you from the remembrance of Allah. And whoever does that, then they are the true losers
﴾10﴿ And spend from what We have provided you before death comes to one of you, and he says, My Lord, why did You not give me respite for a little while so that I could give in charity and be among the righteous
﴾11﴿ And Allah will never delay the soul of anyone when their appointed time has come, and Allah is All-Aware of what you do
[9] Since the vices of the hypocrites were mentioned, now the believers are being warned against the traits of the hypocrites. And because the cause of these vices is being preoccupied with and boasting about wealth and children, this is why—specifically—the preoccupation with them is prohibited (from the remembrance of Allah). What is meant by remembrance here is obedience: monotheism, following the Sunnah, maintaining prayer, and recitation of the Qur'an—all of these are included.
[10] This is encouragement to give in charity during the time when it is accepted (which is before death), and giving in charity is a specific form of the remembrance of Allah, in contrast to the hypocrites who used to prevent charity. The command "spend" is general—it includes zakat, obligatory alms, and spending in the way of Allah in all forms.
(Before death comes to one of you)—this implies hastening to give in charity whenever one has the ability and not delaying it.
(And I be among the righteous)—what is meant by the righteous here includes other reformative actions beyond giving charity: such as having faith, following the Sunnah, and repenting from sins.
[11] (By what you do)—this includes both outward actions and the hidden intentions and states of the heart. The commentator Al-Wahidi said that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) derived the age of 63 for the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace) from this verse. He did so in this way: this verse is at the end of the 63rd surah, and it also applies to the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace), meaning that if his appointed time came, it would not be delayed. After this, Surah At-Taghabun is mentioned—and taghabun (loss) occurred to the ummah due to the passing of the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace).
