َقَدْ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ 1345 اَلْمُجَادَلَة
َ أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ نُهُوا عَنِ النَّجْوَى ثُمَّ يَعُودُونَ لِمَا نُهُوا عَنْهُ وَيَتَنَاجَوْنَ بِالْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ وَمَعْصِيَتِ الرَّسُولِ وَإِذَا جَاءُوكَ حَيَّوْكَ بِمَا لَمْ يُحَيِّكَ بِهِ اللَّهُ وَيَقُولُونَ فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ لَوْلَا يُعَذِّبُنَا اللَّهُ بِمَا نَقُولُ حَسْبُهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ يَصْلَوْنَهَا فَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ ﴿۸﴾ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا تَنَاجَيْتُمْ فَلَا تَتَنَاجَوْا بِالْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ وَمَعْصِيَتِ الرَّسُولِ وَتَنَاجَوْا بِالْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ الَّذِي إِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ ﴿۹﴾ إِنَّمَا النَّجْوَى مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ لِيَحْزُنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَلَيْسَ بِضَارِّهِمْ شَيْئًا إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ ﴿۱۰﴾
﴾8﴿ Alam tara ilal lazeena nuhoo 'anin najwaa summa ya'oodoona limaa nuhoo 'anhu wa yatanaajawna bil ismi wal'udwaani wa ma'siyatir rasooli wa izaa jaaa'ooka haiyawka bimaa lam yuhai yika bihil laahu wa yaqooloona fee anfusihim law laa yu'azzibunal laahu bimaa naqool; hasbuhum jahannnamu yaslawnahaa fabi'sal maseer
﴾9﴿ Yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo izaa tanaajaytum falaa tatanaajaw bil ismi wal 'udwaani wa ma'siyatir rasooli wa tanaajaw bil birri wattaqwaa wattaqul laahal lazeee ilaihi tuhsharoon
﴾10﴿ Innaman najwaa minash shaitaani liyahzunal lazeena aamanoo wa laisa bidaaarrihim shai'an illaa bi-iznil laah; wa 'alal laahi falyatawakkalil mu'minoon
﴾8﴿ Do you not see those who were forbidden from secret conversations, yet they return to what they were forbidden from, and they whisper (in secret) about sin, transgression, and disobedience to the Messenger,
And when they come to you, they greet you in a way that Allah has not prescribed for greeting, and they say within themselves, Why does Allah not punish us for what we say
Hell is sufficient for them—they will be cast into it, and what an evil destination it is
﴾9﴿ O believers, When you hold secret conversations, do not whisper about sin, transgression, and disobedience to the Messenger. Instead, converse in righteousness and piety. And fear Allah, the One to whom you will all be gathered
﴾10﴿ This whispering (secret conversation) is only from Satan, so that he may grieve the believers. Yet, he cannot harm them in any way, except by the permission of Allah the Exalted. And upon Allah alone, the believers place their trust
[8] This verse is a rebuke for four actions of the corrupt:
First, returning to prohibited secret conversations.
Second, holding secret talks for unlawful purposes.
Third, greeting in a way contrary to the Sunnah.
Fourth, considering oneself pure from sin and punishment.
“With sin” refers to any sin related to the rights of Allah, such as disbelief, associating partners with Him, lying, indecency, etc.
“And transgression” refers to sins related to the rights of other people, such as oppression, slander, backbiting, usurping others' wealth, and so on.
“And disobedience to the Messenger” refers to sins that relate to the rights of the Prophet, such as opposing his Sunnah, disrespecting him, introducing innovations and customs, and spreading them.
“They greet you with words that Allah has not greeted you with” — this includes phrases and methods of greeting that contradict the Shariah, such as saying as-sa‘ālayka, welcome, have a good time, good morning (an‘im ṣabāḥan), have a nice day, or considering a raised hand or finger as sufficient for greeting, without beginning with as-salāmu ‘alaykum. In such cases, the person is not deserving of a reply to their greeting.
[9] After rebuking the corrupters for holding unlawful secret talks, this verse first sets a corrective rule for the believers regarding secret consultation. The essence is that when believers gather in an assembly, meeting, or are invited to one, it is necessary to refrain from engaging in unlawful gatherings and to avoid participating in them.
“With righteousness and piety” — birr refers to fulfilling commands, and taqwā refers to avoiding prohibitions. Alternatively, birr refers to doing good to creation, and taqwā refers to fulfilling the rights of Allah.
[10] This verse is a refutation of whispering without necessity — specifically the secret talks of the hypocrites done in opposition to the believers.
“To grieve the believers” — meaning, the hypocrites hold secret conversations deliberately to harm and distress the believers.
“And upon Allah let them rely” — meaning, when the believers sense fear or harm from such whispering, they should seek refuge in Allah, entrust themselves to Him, and await His support and help.
