َقَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ 1333 الحديد
َ يَوْمَ يَقُولُ الْمُنَافِقُونَ وَالْمُنَافِقَاتُ لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا انْظُرُونَا نَقْتَبِسْ مِنْ نُورِكُمْ قِيلَ ارْجِعُوا وَرَاءَكُمْ فَالْتَمِسُوا نُورًا فَضُرِبَ بَيْنَهُمْ بِسُورٍ لَهُ بَابٌ بَاطِنُهُ فِيهِ الرَّحْمَةُ وَظَاهِرُهُ مِنْ قِبَلِهِ الْعَذَابُ ﴿۱۳﴾ يُنَادُونَهُمْ أَلَمْ نَكُنْ مَعَكُمْ قَالُوا بَلَى وَلَكِنَّكُمْ فَتَنْتُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ وَتَرَبَّصْتُمْ وَارْتَبْتُمْ وَغَرَّتْكُمُ الْأَمَانِيُّ حَتَّى جَاءَ أَمْرُ اللَّهِ وَغَرَّكُمْ بِاللَّهِ الْغَرُورُ ﴿۱۴﴾ فَالْيَوْمَ لَا يُؤْخَذُ مِنْكُمْ فِدْيَةٌ وَلَا مِنَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مَأْوَاكُمُ النَّارُ هِيَ مَوْلَاكُمْ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ ﴿۱۵﴾
﴾13﴿ Yawma yaqoolul munaafiqoona walmunaafiqaatu lil lazeena aamanu unzuroonaa naqtabis min noorikum qeelarji'oo waraaa'akum faltamisoo nooran faduriba bainahum bisooril lahoo baabun, baatinuhoo feehir rahmatu wa zaahiruhoo min qibalihi-'azaab
﴾14﴿ Yunaadoonahum alam nakum ma'akum qaaloo balaa wa laakinnakum fatantum anfusakum wa tarabbastum wartabtum wa gharratkumul amaaniyyu hatta jaaa'a amrul laahi wa gharrakum billaahil gharoor
﴾15﴿ Fal Yawma laa yu'khazu minkum fidyatunw wa laa minal lazeena kafaroo; ma'waakumun Naaru hiya maw laakum wa bi'sal maseer
﴾13﴿ On the day when the hypocrite men and hypocrite women will say to those who believed, "Wait for us so that we may take some of your light, it will be said to them, "Go back and seek light elsewhere. Then, a wall will be placed between them, having a gate—inside it is mercy, but on the outside, there is punishment
﴾14﴿ They will call out to them, Were we not with you?" They will say, "Yes, but you led yourselves to ruin, you awaited (misfortune for us), you doubted, and your desires deceived you until the command of Allah came, and the deceiver (Satan) deluded you concerning Allah
﴾15﴿ So today, no ransom will be accepted from you nor from those who disbelieved. Your abode is the Fire—it is most fitting for you, and what a terrible destination it is
[13] This is a warning in the Hereafter to the hypocrites—those who falsely claimed faith, but in reality had no true belief, and who did not spend in charity, rather they were miserly and encouraged others to be miserly as well.
(Naqtabis)—Iqtibās means to take fire or light from someone else’s flame to ignite one’s own.
Here, it refers to seeking light or trying to gain a share of the believers’ illumination.
There are two interpretations among the commentators:
First opinion: The hypocrites are initially given a small amount of light, which is then extinguished.
Second opinion: They are given no light at all—their hope is merely that they might share the believers’ light while crossing the bridge (Ṣirāṭ), but the believers cross with speed, leaving them behind, and the hypocrites are left completely deprived of light.
(Bi-sūrin)—this refers to a wall, which is also called ḥijāb (barrier) and aʿrāf in Sūrah al-Aʿrāf (7:46).
(Bāṭinuhu fīhi al-raḥmah)—the inner side of the wall contains mercy, referring to Paradise.
(Al-ʿadhāb)—this refers to Hellfire, meaning the gate through which the people of Paradise enter, but the hypocrites are not permitted to enter through it, and so they are drawn nearer to Hell.
[14] (Yunādūnahum)—“They (the hypocrites) will call out to them (the believers).” The word nidāʾ (calling out) is used for someone far away, indicating that the believers will have moved far ahead and the gate will have been closed.
So the hypocrites will cry out loudly in desperation.
(Maʿakum)—“We were with you”: meaning, they were with the believers in gatherings, battles, and all outward religious obligations.
(Wa lākinna-kum fatantum)—Five traits of the hypocrites are mentioned, which caused their deeds to be wasted:
1. (Fatantum)—You threw yourselves into the trial of shirk and hypocrisy.
This led to your destruction, as you were engrossed in this fitnah.
2. (Wa tarabbaṣtum)—You waited for disasters to befall the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace) and the believers, so that they would perish and you could then reveal your disbelief.
This is like the attitude mentioned in Sūrah al-Tawbah (9:52, 98).
It also carries the meaning of delaying commitment, by constantly weighing and postponing.
3. (Wa irtabtum)—You doubted the Oneness of Allah, the truthfulness of the Messenger, the resurrection after death, and the promises of Allah the Exalted.
4. (Wa gharratkum al-amānīy)—You were deceived by false hopes and unfounded ideas promoted by corrupt scholars and pretentious spiritual leaders.
Also, by long, vain hopes and wishful thinking, you were misled and failed to truly affirm the Oneness of Allah and the message in your hearts.
[15] This is a warning related to the Hereafter, and it is either included under the speech of the believers to the hypocrites, or it is a statement from Allah or the angels directed at them.
(Mawlākum)—this can mean “your master” (awlā) or “your helper,” said in a tone of reproach and condemnation.
Alternatively, it may mean “your disposer”—that Allah the Exalted will assign your punishment to the Fire, and it (the Fire) will become your appointed authority, carrying out the torment upon you.
