[from 50 to 54] In these verses as well, Allah the Exalted mentions His control through the destruction of great nations, serving as a worldly warning.
It mentions the punishment of four nations who had denied the prophets (peace be upon them).
(الْأُولَى) – This refers to two tribes of ‘Ād. Ād al-Ūlā means the first ‘Ād, known as ‘Ād of Iram, while the other ‘Ād refers to the Thamūd people.
Or it could mean that al-Ūlā refers to those who existed far earlier in time, such that no other ‘Ād existed before them.
(أَظْلَمَ) – means more unjust in belief, and أَطْغَى – more rebellious in action.
Or the first refers to violations of the rights of Allah, and the second to violations of the rights of people.
The fifth nation, Pharaoh (Fir‘awn), is not mentioned here.
It is possible that the Scrolls of Moses already included reference to that nation, and for this reason, it was not repeated here.
[55] Since some blessings were previously mentioned, now the denier among humans is being rebuked.
[56] This is the truthfulness of the Messenger, and it is a warning to the deniers—just as punishment came upon those who denied the previous messengers, likewise, punishment will also come upon those who deny this Messenger, either in this world or in the Hereafter.
