قُلْ يَا عِبَادِ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمْ لِلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا فِي هَذِهِ الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةٌ وَأَرْضُ اللَّهِ وَاسِعَةٌ إِنَّمَا يُوَفَّى الصَّابِرُونَ أَجْرَهُمْ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ ﴿۱۰﴾ قُلْ إِنِّي أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ مُخْلِصًا لَهُ الدِّينَ ﴿۱۱﴾ وَأُمِرْتُ لِأَنْ أَكُونَ أَوَّلَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ ﴿۱۲﴾ قُلْ إِنِّي أَخَافُ إِنْ عَصَيْتُ رَبِّي عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ ﴿۱۳﴾ قُلِ اللَّهَ أَعْبُدُ مُخْلِصًا لَهُ دِينِي ﴿۱۴﴾
﴾10﴿ Qul yaa 'ibaadil lazeena aamanut taqoo Rabbakum; lillazeena ahsanoo fee haazihid dunyaa hasanah; wa ardul laahi waasi'ah; innamaa yuwaffas saabiroona ajrahum bighayri hisab
﴾11﴿ Qul inneee umirtu an a'budal laaha mukhlisal lahud deen
﴾12﴿ Wa umirtu li an akoona awwalal muslimeen
﴾13﴿ Qul inneee akhaafu in 'asaitu Rabbee 'azaaba Yawmin 'azeem
﴾14﴿ Qulil laaha a'budu mukhlisal lahoo deenee
﴾10﴿ Say: O My servants who have believed, fear your Lord! For those who act with sincerity in this world, there is a good (reward). And indeed, the earth of Allah is spacious. Surely, those who are steadfast in patience will be given their reward in full, without measure
﴾11﴿ Say: Indeed, I have been commanded to worship Allah, devoting my worship solely to Him in sincerity
﴾12﴿ And I have been commanded to be among the first of the Muslims
﴾13﴿ Say: “Indeed, I fear, if I disobey the command of my Lord, the punishment of a great Day
﴾14﴿ Say: I worship Allah, devoting my worship solely to Him in sincerity
[10] After describing the lofty status of the believers, now their obligations are mentioned—such as piety (taqwā), excellence in conduct (iḥsān), migration (hijrah), patience (ṣabr), and then the glad tidings related to them.
(قُلْ يَا عِبَادِ) — This is a command to the Messenger of Allah (May Allah bless him and give him peace) to deliver Allah’s address to the believers, because the speech of the Messenger is the speech of the One who sent him. That is, "Say, O Messenger, on My behalf (as Allah says): O My servants."
The statement of the ignorant is incorrect when they say that this verse proves that we believers are the servants of the Messenger. This claim contradicts the very message of the surah, which declares: "So worship Allah, being sincere to Him in religion." Thus, this claim is a distortion by the ignorant and an affirmation of shirk (associating partners with Allah).
(وَأَرْضُ اللَّهِ وَاسِعَةٌ) — This is encouragement to perform hijrah (migration), meaning: after encouraging taqwā and commanding iḥsān, one might think that in certain lands, acting upon this becomes difficult, so is compromise allowed? The answer is: do not compromise—rather, leave that land and migrate.
And since fulfilling the duties of migration requires patience, the next sentence gives glad tidings as motivation for bearing that hardship.
[11,12,13,14] These are revealed proofs supporting the main claim of the surah, which is the oneness of Allah in worship (tawḥīd fī al-‘ibādah). This teaching is conveyed in this way as an answer to a question.
When a monotheist (muwaḥḥid) migrates, the polytheists may ask: “Why are you migrating?” He will respond: “I am commanded to uphold tawḥīd in worship, and that is difficult to practice in this land. Therefore, I am migrating.”
They may then ask: “But inner acts of faith (heart-based worship) can be done in secret—just avoid the outward acts, so there is no need for migration.” In response, he would say: (وَأُمِرْتُ لِأَنْ أَكُونَ أَوَّلَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ) — “And I am commanded to be the first of the Muslims.” Here, “Islam” refers to outward acts of worship, which are also obligatory, and I cannot abandon them.
Again, they may ask: “Even if this is a command for you, perhaps it is not obligatory, so opposing it may be permissible?” The answer is given in this statement: (قُلْ إِنِّي أَخَافُ إِنْ عَصَيْتُ) — “Say, I fear if I disobey…” — meaning, opposing this command leads to a great punishment.
Finally, after all these responses, the separation between the path of the monotheist and that of the polytheist is stated with these words: (قُلِ اللَّهَ أَعْبُدُ مُخْلِصًا لَهُ دِينِي) — “Say, I worship Allah alone, being sincere to Him in my religion.”
