وَمَا لِيَ 1113 ص
إِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنِّي خَالِقٌ بَشَرًا مِنْ طِينٍ ﴿۷۱﴾ فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِنْ رُوحِي فَقَعُوا لَهُ سَاجِدِينَ ﴿۷۲﴾ فَسَجَدَ الْمَلَائِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ ﴿۷۳﴾ إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ اسْتَكْبَرَ وَكَانَ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ ﴿۷۴﴾ قَالَ يَا إِبْلِيسُ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَسْجُدَ لِمَا خَلَقْتُ بِيَدَيَّ أَسْتَكْبَرْتَ أَمْ كُنْتَ مِنَ الْعَالِينَ ﴿۷۵﴾ قَالَ أَنَا خَيْرٌ مِنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِي مِنْ نَارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُ مِنْ طِينٍ ﴿
﴾71﴿ Iz qaala Rabbuka lilmalaaa'ikati innee khaaliqun basharan min teen
﴾72﴿ Fa-iza sawwaituhoo wa nafakhtu feehi mir roohee faqa'oo lahoo saajideen
﴾73﴿ Fasajadal malaaa'ikatu kulluhum ajma'oon
﴾74﴿ Illaaa Iblees; stakbara wa kaana minal kaafireen
﴾75﴿ Qaala yaaa Ibleesu maa mana'aka an tasjuda limaa khalaqtu bi yadaiya 'a stakbarta am kunta min al 'aaleen
﴾76﴿ Qaala ana khairum minhu; khalaqtanee min naarinw wa khalaqtahoo min teen
﴾71﴿ > When your Lord said to the angels, Indeed, I am going to create a human being from clay
﴾72﴿ Then, when I have fashioned him (Adam) perfectly and breathed into him of My spirit, fall down before him in prostration
﴾73﴿ Then all the angels prostrated themselves together
﴾74﴿ Except Iblis; he became arrogant and was among the disbelievers
﴾75﴿ God the Exalted said: O Iblis, what prevented you from prostrating yourself before that which I created with My two hands? Did you grow arrogant, or are you among the exalted
﴾76﴿ He said I am better than him You created me from fire and created him from clay
[from 71 to 74] In this verse, the details of yakhtaṣimūn (their dispute) are explained. This incident is mentioned here to show that even the angels and Iblīs were subjected to a trial—being commanded to prostrate to Ādam (peace be upon him).
Anyone who is tested in this way cannot be a partner with Allah the Exalted, nor a compulsory intercessor. This is a refutation of the polytheists who associated divinity with the angels and jinn.
"My spirit (rūḥī)" refers to the spirit whose ownership and control belongs solely to Allah the Exalted. There is no apparent worldly cause for it, and due to this unique status, it is attributed directly to Allah (rūḥī – “My spirit”).
"Then the angels prostrated" – this was a form of prostration as a greeting (taḥiyyah), which was permitted in previous nations. However, it was only in the form of bowing the head, not the full act of worship with the forehead on the ground.
In our ummah, greetings are limited to saying: "As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh." Shaking hands and embracing are also established Sunnahs. But bowing the head during greeting is prohibited.

[75] With Allah the Exalted, the true reason for Iblīs not prostrating was already known—it was arrogance.
However, Allah still asked Iblīs about it so that his false excuse would also become evident and exposed.
[from 76 to 83] This is Iblīs’s response, choosing the second option—that he truly believed himself to be superior. And this was a clear lie.
"You created me from fire" – this is the basis of his claim. The second, hidden premise of his argument is: "Fire is better than clay."
So, the conclusion he drew was: "I am better than him."
But this reasoning—the major premise—is false, because the benefits of clay far outweigh those of fire.
"He said: By Your might" – in this oath, there is proof of Iblīs’s inner wickedness. He acknowledges Allah’s might but refuses to acknowledge the honor of Ādam (peace be upon him), even though Allah explicitly mentioned Ādam’s honor with the words: "I created him with My own hands."
