﴾42﴿ So today, none of you hold power over benefit or harm for another, and We will say to those who associated partners with Allah, 'Taste the punishment of the Fire that you used to deny
﴾43﴿ And when Our clear verses are recited to them, they say, 'This is nothing but a man who wants to turn you away from what your forefathers worshipped.' And they say, 'This is nothing but a fabricated lie.' And those who disbelieve say about the truth when it comes to them, 'This is nothing but clear magic
﴾44﴿ They recite it (to justify their polytheism), while We did not send to them any warner before you
﴾45﴿ And those before them denied, while these (people) have not attained even a tenth of what We had given to them in wealth. Yet they denied My messengers, so how was My punishment
[42] This is the conclusion of what came before.
(“Some of you to others” — بَعْضُكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ) includes both the angels and the jinn.
[43] This is a rebuke for the denial of the Qur'an and the Messenger of Allah (May Allah bless him and give him peace), through the mention of three objections:
First, “He turns us away from the path of our forefathers” — meaning that in rejecting the Qur'an, they cling to the imitation of their ancestors.
Second, “It is a lie” (إِفْكٌ) — meaning a falsehood whose reality has been completely distorted.
(“Fabricated” — مُفْتَرًى) — meaning they falsely attribute it to Allah the Exalted.
[44] This is a refutation of their previous claims — meaning that they have no revealed evidence to support their polytheism, nor do they have any statement from a previous messenger as proof.
This indicates that the legitimate religious proof must be either the Book of Allah or the Sunnah of the Messenger.
[45] This is a worldly warning through the mention of the punishment that befell previous nations.
(“Mi‘shār” — مِعْشَار) refers to a tenth of a tenth (i.e., one-thousandth). Since “mi‘shār” is a tenth of “‘ushr,” and “‘ushr” is a tenth part, the intended meaning is one-thousandth — which expresses strong exaggeration.
That is, these present-day disbelievers do not possess even one-thousandth of the physical strength, wealth, skill, or longevity compared to the disbelievers of the past.
In this verse, denial is mentioned twice: the first denial is of monotheism and the signs (verses), and the second is the denial of the messengers.
