﴾29﴿ And they say, When is this promise, if you are truthful
﴾30﴿ Say, For you, there is an appointed day that you cannot delay by an hour nor advance
﴾31﴿ And the disbelievers say, We will never believe in this Quran nor in the scriptures that came before it. But if you could see when the wrongdoers will be made to stand before their Lord, they will throw back words at one another. Those who were deemed weak will say to those who were arrogant, If it were not for you, we would surely have been believers
﴾32﴿ Those who were arrogant will say to those who were deemed weak, Did we prevent you from guidance after it had come to you? Rather, you were the criminals

[29] Since the truthfulness of the Prophet has been established, now a warning is given to the deniers of prophethood and the Resurrection.
They thought: If you are truly a messenger, then you must have knowledge of the unseen—so inform us of the time of punishment.
[30] This is a response to the previous statement, but their question was out of stubbornness and mockery.
Therefore, the answer is also given in the form of threat and warning.
[31] This is another warning—against the denial of the Qur’an and other divine scriptures.
At first, they trusted the People of the Book, because they heard from them that their scriptures contained refutations of shirk and mentioned the qualities of this Messenger of Allah (May Allah bless him and give him peace).
But then the polytheists also began to reject those scriptures, following their leaders as a supposed proof.
“Istud‘ifū” means they were weak in knowledge and transmission, and they followed their leaders.
The passive form is used to indicate that these leaders did not teach them knowledge, leaving them ignorant so they could benefit from them.
“Istakbarū”—they considered themselves above accepting the truth, boasting about their knowledge and wealth. These are the ones who were followed.
[32] This is the response from the leaders: We did not force you, nor did we present any sound proof.
Rather, you yourselves approved of sinful actions, and for that reason, you followed us without any valid argument.
