اتْلُ مَا أُوحِيَْ 1014 الأحزاب
وَإِذْ يَقُولُ الْمُنَافِقُونَ وَالَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مَرَضٌ مَا وَعَدَنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ إِلَّا غُرُورًا ﴿۱۲﴾ وَإِذْ قَالَتْ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْهُمْ يَا أَهْلَ يَثْرِبَ لَا مُقَامَ لَكُمْ فَارْجِعُوا وَيَسْتَأْذِنُ فَرِيقٌ مِنْهُمُ النَّبِيَّ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ بُيُوتَنَا عَوْرَةٌ وَمَا هِيَ بِعَوْرَةٍ إِنْ يُرِيدُونَ إِلَّا فِرَارًا ﴿۱۳﴾ وَلَوْ دُخِلَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ أَقْطَارِهَا ثُمَّ سُئِلُوا الْفِتْنَةَ لَآتَوْهَا وَمَا تَلَبَّثُوا بِهَا إِلَّا يَسِيرًا ﴿۱۴﴾
﴾12﴿ Wa iz yaqoolul munaafiqoona wallazeena fee quloobihim maradum maa wa'adanal laahu wa Rasooluhooo illaa ghurooraa
﴾13﴿ Wa iz qaalat taaa'ifatum minhum yaaa ahla Yasriba laa muqaamaa lakum farji'oo; wa yastaazinu fareequm minhumun Nabiyya yaqooloona inna buyootanaa 'awrah; wa maa hiya bi'awratin iny yureedoona illaa firaaraa
﴾14﴿ wa law dukhilat 'alaihim min aqtaarihaa summa su'ilul fitnata la aatawhaa wa maa talabbasoo bihaaa illaa yaseeraa
﴾12﴿ And when the hypocritical men and those in whose hearts was doubt said, "Allah and His Messenger have promised us nothing but deception
﴾13﴿ And when a group of them said, O people of Yathrib (Medina), there is no place for you here, so return. And a group of them sought permission from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), saying, Our houses are exposed, while they were not exposed; they only intended to flee
﴾14﴿ And if armies were to enter upon them from all sides of Medina and they were then asked to commit polytheism, they would surely do so without hesitation, and they would not remain in it except for a little while
[12] This describes the state of the hypocrites during the Battle of the Confederates (Aḥzāb), and it includes rebukes and a mention of their disgraceful traits.
"Illā ghurūran" — meaning: They deceived us with false promises of victory and triumph, and led us away from the religion of our forefathers. Now we see no help coming to us.
This statement is an expression of disbelief (kufr).
It represents the first disgraceful trait of the hypocrites mentioned here.
[13] In this verse, there is a rebuke directed at the hypocrites, and two groups among them are mentioned:
The first group: those who discouraged others from fighting in the path of Allah.
The second group: those who themselves stayed back from jihad using false excuses.
"Yathrib" — in the time of ignorance (Jāhiliyyah), Madinah was called Yathrib because its water and climate were considered harmful, and it had illnesses.
The word tharb carries the meaning of blame and sorrow. The Messenger of Allah (May Allah bless him and give him peace) prayed that Allah would move the fever and diseases away from Madinah to Juhfah (a town where the Jews resided at the time).
He named the city Madinah and Ṭābah (pure).
In some narrations, it is mentioned that the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace) prohibited calling it Yathrib. However, the hypocrites intentionally went against him and continued to use that term.
Some commentators have written that the city was first settled by someone from the tribe of ‘Amāliqah named Yathrib ibn ‘Amīl, and hence it was named after him.
"‘Awrah" — this refers to a weakness or vulnerability, meaning the city is not well-defended: perhaps the gates are unguarded, the walls are low, or it lacks protectors, making it easy for the enemy to enter.
[14] This too is a rebuke to the hypocrites, and two of their disgraceful traits are mentioned:
It indicates that just as they are quick to flee from the battlefield of jihad, they are also ready to turn back from the religion of tawḥīd (monotheism).
"Al-fitnah" — here refers to committing shirk (associating partners with Allah) or fighting against the believers.
"Bihā" — refers to their response to the trial. It means: they do not hesitate to accept the fitnah (trial), but rather, they rush to embrace it.
Or it could mean that after accepting the fitnah, they do not remain in Madinah for long but are quickly destroyed by punishment.
