ْقَالَ أَلَمْ 750 طٰهٰ

قَالَ يَا هَارُونُ مَا مَنَعَكَ إِذْ رَأَيْتَهُمْ ضَلُّوا ﴿۹۲﴾ أَلَّا تَتَّبِعَنِ أَفَعَصَيْتَ أَمْرِي ﴿۹۳﴾ قَالَ يَا ابْنَ أُمَّ لَا تَأْخُذْ بِلِحْيَتِي وَلَا بِرَأْسِي إِنِّي خَشِيتُ أَنْ تَقُولَ فَرَّقْتَ بَيْنَ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ وَلَمْ تَرْقُبْ قَوْلِي ﴿۹۴﴾ قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكَ يَا سَامِرِيُّ ﴿۹۵﴾

﴾92﴿ Qaala Yaa Haaroonu maa mana 'aka iz ra aitahum dallooo
﴾93﴿ Allaa tattabi'ani afa'asaita amree
﴾94﴿ Qaala yabna'umma laa ta'khuz bi lihyatee wa laa bi ra'see innee khasheetu an taqoola farraqta baina Baneee Israaa'eela wa lam tarqub qawlee
﴾95﴿ Qaala famaa khatbuka yaa Saamiriyy

﴾92﴿ Moses (peace be upon him) said, O Aaron, what prevented you when you saw them going astray
﴾93﴿ That you did not follow me? Have you disobeyed my command
﴾94﴿ He said, O son of my mother, do not seize my beard or my head. Indeed, I feared that you would say, 'You have caused division among the Children of Israel and did not give heed to my word
﴾95﴿ Moses (peace be upon him) said, So what is your case, O Samiri

[92,93] Since it became clear from the previous verses that Harun (peace be upon him) did not show any leniency, but Musa (peace be upon him) was unaware of the situation, therefore out of anger, he grabbed his brother’s head and beard and pulled him toward himself, and said to him the words found in these two verses.
(أَلَّا تَتَّبِعَنِ) has two meanings:
The first meaning is: Why didn’t you fight them? That is, why didn’t you stop them forcefully, as I would have done?
The second meaning is: Why didn’t you come to the appointed place (miqāt) to inform me of the situation?
And the intended meaning of (أَمْرِي) is what was mentioned in verse 142 of Surah Al-A‘rāf.
This reproach by Musa (peace be upon him) was based on his personal judgment (ijtihād), otherwise Harun (peace be upon him) had fulfilled his responsibility.
[94] In this verse, the excuse of Harun (peace be upon him) is presented in response to Musa’s (peace be upon him) statement (أَلَّا تَتَّبِعَنِ).
Meaning, if I had fought them or left them behind and come after you, divisions and factions would have arisen among them.
(وَلَمْ تَرْقُبْ قَوْلِي) – This phrase has two possible interpretations:
The first is that it is the statement of Harun (peace be upon him), meaning: if the Children of Israel had become divided and I had presented my excuse to you, you would not have accepted it.
The second interpretation is that it is part of the words of Musa (peace be upon him), and the intended "my word" refers to what is mentioned in verse 142 of Surah Al-A‘rāf.
Note: This verse also shows that holding the beard and hair of the head—as was done here—is consistent with the tradition of the Prophets.
Therefore, those who say that there is no fixed length for the beard and it may be trimmed to any extent, and who use the hadith in Sunan al-Tirmidhi as evidence that the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace) trimmed his beard from the sides—this hadith is weak.
And it is also contrary to this verse.

[95] The purpose of this question is: What drove you to do this, and what was your reasoning for making the calf into a deity?
