﴾85﴿ And when the wrongdoers see the punishment, it will not be lightened for them, nor will they be granted any respite
﴾86﴿ And when the polytheists see their (false) deities, they will say, "O our Lord, these are the deities we used to call upon besides You." But they (the deities) will throw back the response to them, saying, Indeed, you are liars
﴾87﴿ And on this day, they will present lies before Allah, and that which they used to fabricate will vanish from them
﴾88﴿ Those who disbelieve and prevent others from the path of Allah, We will increase their punishment upon punishment because of the corruption they used to spread
[85] This verse also contains a warning about the Hereafter (تخویف اُخروی).
The consequence (جزاء) for "إذا" is omitted, and its implied meaning is: "فَيُعَذَّبُونَ" ("then they will be punished").
[86] This verse also contains a warning about the Hereafter, illustrating how false deities will disown their worshipers.
"(إِنَّكُمْ لَكَاذِبُونَ)" ("Indeed, you are liars")—meaning: We never commanded you to worship us.
This is evidence that these false gods are unaware of the condition of their worshipers.
Similar mentions are found in verses (28–29) of Surah Yunus and verses (5–6) of Surah Al-Ahqaf.
[87] This verse also contains a warning (تخویف).
The meaning of "(ضَلَّ عَنْهُمْ)" is: those false arguments and justifications they used to make for themselves will be forgotten or lost from them.
The second meaning is: those false deities they used to falsely call gods will disappear from them.
The third meaning is: their false hopes will vanish—hopes that those gods would intercede on their behalf.
[88] In the previous verses, the focus was on the so-called righteous beings who were falsely taken as partners with Allah Most High, and the warning was directed at polytheists in general.
In this verse, the warning is specifically aimed at those misguided individuals who led others astray.
"(يُفْسِدُونَ)" ("they spread corruption") refers to their act of calling others toward misguidance and leading them away from the truth.
