وَمَا مِنْ دَابَّةٍ 533 یوسف
قَالَتْ فَذَلِكُنَّ الَّذِي لُمْتُنَّنِي فِيهِ وَلَقَدْ رَاوَدْتُهُ عَنْ نَفْسِهِ فَاسْتَعْصَمَ وَلَئِنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ مَا آمُرُهُ لَيُسْجَنَنَّ وَلَيَكُونًا مِنَ الصَّاغِرِينَ ﴿۳۲﴾ قَالَ رَبِّ السِّجْنُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِمَّا يَدْعُونَنِي إِلَيْهِ وَإِلَّا تَصْرِفْ عَنِّي كَيْدَهُنَّ أَصْبُ إِلَيْهِنَّ وَأَكُنْ مِنَ الْجَاهِلِينَ ﴿۳۳﴾ فَاسْتَجَابَ لَهُ رَبُّهُ فَصَرَفَ عَنْهُ كَيْدَهُنَّ إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ ﴿
﴾32﴿ Qaalat fazaalikunnal lazee lumtunnanee feeh; wa laqad raawattuhoo 'an nafsihee fasta'sam; wa la'il lam yaf'al maaa aamuruhoo la yusjananna wa la yakoonan minas saaghireen
﴾33﴿ Qaala rabbis sijnu ahabbu ilaiya mimma yad'oo naneee 'ilaihi wa illaa tasrif 'annee kaidahunna asbu ilaihinna wa akum minal jaahileen
﴾34﴿ Fastajaaba lahoo rabbuhoo fasarafa 'anhu kaidahunn; innahoo huwas Samee'ul 'Aleem
﴾32﴿ She said, 'This is the one about whom you blamed me, and indeed, I sought to seduce him, but he firmly refused. And if he does not do what I order him, he will surely be imprisoned, and he will be of those who are humiliated
﴾33﴿ Joseph said, My Lord, prison is more beloved to me than what these women are inviting me to. And if You do not turn their plot away from me, I may incline toward them and become one of the ignorant
﴾34﴿ So his Lord accepted his prayer and removed from him their deceit; indeed, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing
[32] In this verse, the following points are highlighted:
First, Zuleikha reproaches the women, instead of accepting their blame—she turns their criticism back on them.
Then, she openly acknowledges the chastity of Yusuf (peace be upon him), admitting that he resisted her despite her persistent attempts.
After that, she pressures him further, intending to imprison and humiliate him to achieve her desire.
(فَاسْتَعْصَمَ) – The use of both sīn and tā’ in this verb form conveys extreme emphasis—it means Yusuf (peace be upon him) held firmly to chastity and actively resisted with great determination.
[33] In this verse, Yusuf (peace be upon him) expresses his preference for prison, choosing it as a means of protection from sin and from the demands of the women. He openly acknowledges his dependence on Allah for being saved from wrongdoing.
(كَيْدَهُنَّ) – This indicates that all the women either directly tried to seduce Yusuf (peace be upon him) or supported Zuleikha’s plan to pressure him.
He chose prison because it became clear that there was no other way to escape the sin except through being locked away. However, even prison alone was not sufficient for protection unless Allah’s help was granted—hence his words: (وَإِلَّا تَصْرِفْ عَنِّي كَيْدَهُنَّ) – “And unless You turn their plot away from me...”
Benefit: This verse shows that when a person is tested with both a hardship and a sin, it is necessary to choose hardship over sin.
[34] In this verse, the acceptance of the supplication of Yusuf (peace be upon him) is mentioned, regarding being saved from the deceit of the women: "So He averted from him their plot" (فَصَرَفَ عَنْهُ كَيْدَهُنَّ).
This makes it clear that the purpose of requesting imprisonment was to be saved from sin.
