يَعْتَذِرُونَ 465 يونس
إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَظْلِمُ النَّاسَ شَيْئًا وَلَكِنَّ النَّاسَ أَنْفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ ﴿۴۴﴾ وَيَوْمَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ كَأَنْ لَمْ يَلْبَثُوا إِلَّا سَاعَةً مِنَ النَّهَارِ يَتَعَارَفُونَ بَيْنَهُمْ قَدْ خَسِرَ الَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِلِقَاءِ اللَّهِ وَمَا كَانُوا مُهْتَدِينَ ﴿۴۵﴾ وَإِمَّا نُرِيَنَّكَ بَعْضَ الَّذِي نَعِدُهُمْ أَوْ نَتَوَفَّيَنَّكَ فَإِلَيْنَا مَرْجِعُهُمْ ثُمَّ اللَّهُ شَهِيدٌ عَلَى مَا يَفْعَلُونَ ﴿۴۶﴾
﴾44﴿ Innal laaha laa yazlimun naasa shai'anw wa laakin nannaasa anfusahum yazlimoon
﴾45﴿ Wa Yawma yahshuruhum ka 'an lam yalbasooo illaa saa'atan minan nahaari yata'aarafoona bainahum; qad khasiral lazeena kazzaboo bi liqaaa'il laahi wa maa kaanoo muhtadeen
﴾46﴿ Wa imma nuriyannaka ba'dal lazee na'iduhum aw natawaffayannaka fa ilainaa marji'uhum thummal laahu shaheedun 'alaa maa yaf'aloon
﴾44﴿ Indeed, Allah does not wrong people at all, but it is people who wrong themselves
﴾45﴿ And the Day He gathers them together, (it will be as though) they had not stayed (in the world) except for an hour of a day, recognizing one another. Indeed, those who denied the meeting with Allah will have lost, and they were not guided
﴾46﴿ And if We show you (O Prophet) some of what We promise them of punishment, or We cause you to die (before it comes upon them), then to Us is their return. And Allah, the Exalted, is fully aware of what they do
[44] This is the answer to a question—the question being: If their ability to hear and see has been taken away from them, is that not injustice?
The essence of the answer is: This is not injustice, because Allah the Exalted does not wrong anyone. Rather, Allah acts within His own dominion however He wills—and that is justice.
Moreover, Allah the Exalted has given these people the means of benefit—ears, eyes, and intellect—but their wrongdoing lies in the fact that they do not make use of these faculties.
[45] In this verse, the fear of the Hereafter is being emphasized. The message is that the terror of the Day of Judgment will be so intense that the deniers will perceive their entire worldly life as if it lasted only a single hour.
(يَتَعَارَفُونَ بَيْنَهُمْ) – The intended meaning is a kind of mutual recognition that leads to blame and reproach among them. This interaction happens in certain moments, but due to overwhelming awe and fear, even that recognition will eventually fade.
Or, the meaning could be: their recognition of one another will not be beneficial in any way—it will only serve the purpose of blame and regret.
(إِلَّا سَاعَةً) – Their perception of worldly life as only “an hour” is either due to the sheer awe of the Day of Resurrection or because they wasted their lives without doing anything for the Hereafter—making their entire life seem meaningless, like a brief moment.
(قَدْ خَسِرَ الَّذِينَ) – This is the reason for what preceded it: meaning, the cause of this overwhelming fear and regret is their denial of the Resurrection and their lack of guidance in accepting Tawheed.
[46] In this verse, there is both comfort for the Prophet (peace be upon him) and a warning for the deniers. The meaning is: either We will bring punishment upon them in this world, and you will witness it, or if We do not punish them in the world, then surely there will be punishment for them in the Hereafter—so you need not worry about their punishment.
(ثُمَّ اللَّهُ شَهِيدٌ) – This indicates that no other witness is needed for their actions; Allah the Exalted Himself is fully aware.
(وَإِمَّا نُرِيَنَّكَ) – The consequence (reward or consolation) is implied: i.e., "you will be comforted by seeing it."
(أَوْ نَتَوَفَّيَنَّكَ) – The implied meaning is: "you will witness it in the Hereafter."
(فَإِلَيْنَا مَرْجِعُهُمْ) – This is the reason why the recompense can remain hidden: their final return is to Us. Similar phrasing is found in verse 77 of Surah Al-Mu’min and verses 41–42 of Surah Az-Zukhruf.
Benefit: In this verse, the contrast between (نُرِيَنَّكَ – We show you) and (نَتَوَفَّيَنَّكَ – We cause you to die) makes it clear that worldly events are not visible after death.
