يَعْتَذِرُونَ 443 التوبة
إِنَّ اللَّهَ اشْتَرَى مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنْفُسَهُمْ وَأَمْوَالَهُمْ بِأَنَّ لَهُمُ الْجَنَّةَ يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَيَقْتُلُونَ وَيُقْتَلُونَ وَعْدًا عَلَيْهِ حَقًّا فِي التَّوْرَاةِ وَالْإِنْجِيلِ وَالْقُرْآنِ وَمَنْ أَوْفَى بِعَهْدِهِ مِنَ اللَّهِ فَاسْتَبْشِرُوا بِبَيْعِكُمُ الَّذِي بَايَعْتُمْ بِهِ وَذَلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ ﴿۱۱۱﴾ التَّائِبُونَ الْعَابِدُونَ الْحَامِدُونَ السَّائِحُونَ الرَّاكِعُونَ السَّاجِدُونَ الْآمِرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَالنَّاهُونَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَالْحَافِظُونَ لِحُدُودِ اللَّهِ وَبَشِّرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ﴿۱۱۲﴾
﴾111﴿ Innal laahash taraa minal mu'mineena anfusahum wa amwaalahum bi anna lahumul jannah; yuqaatiloona fee sabeelil laahi fa yaqtuloona wa yuqtaloona wa'dan 'alaihi haqqan fit Tawraati wal Injeeli wal Qur'aaan; wa man awfaa bi'ahdihee minal laah; fastabshiroo bi bay'ikumul lazee baaya'tum bih; wa zaalika huwal fawzul 'azeem
﴾112﴿ At taaa'iboonal 'aabidoonal haamidoonas saaa'ihoonar raaki'oonas saajidoonal aamiroona bilma'roofi wannaahoona 'anil munkari walhaafizoona lihudoodil laah; wa bashshiril mu'mineen
﴾111﴿ Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their wealth in exchange for Paradise. They fight in the way of Allah So they kill the disbelievers and are killed. Allah Almighty has promised them a true promise in the Torah, the Gospel and the Quran And who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah? So be happy with the sale of yourselves, for you have made a bargain with Allah. And that is the great success
﴾112﴿ These (people) are those who repent to Allah, who worship Him, who praise Him, His travelers are for jihad They bow down, they prostrate, they enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil, and they protect the limits of Allah Almighty. Give good tidings to such believers
[111] In this noble verse, there is strong encouragement toward jihad, following a severe reprimand of those who abandoned it.
The verse uses a beautiful analogy: it likens the souls and wealth of the believers being spent in the obedience of Allah to a transaction or sale (مَبيعَة)—
where Paradise (Jannah) is the price or reward for what is given.
(يُقَاتِلُونَ)
This phrase explains “أنفُسهم”—that is, their lives are the subject of the sale, and they fulfill this by fighting in the path of Allah.
The verse implies that:
Souls and wealth of the believers belong to Allah.
Therefore, believers have no right to use them except in ways that please Allah.
This powerful metaphor illustrates that jihad and sacrifice in Allah’s cause are not burdens, but investments in an eternal reward: Paradise.
[112] In this verse, ten qualities of the believers are mentioned as an encouragement and to show that these attributes are necessary alongside jihad for achieving the ranks of Paradise.
These qualities include both inner (spiritual) and outer (physical and behavioral) traits.
1. (التَّائِبُونَ) – Those who repent from all sins, whether shirk, disbelief, or other major or minor sins, whether they involve rights of Allah or rights of people.
2. (الْعَابِدُونَ) – Those who worship, referring to all types of worship:
of the heart (like sincerity and trust),
bodily acts (like prayer), and
financial acts (like zakat).
3. (الْحَامِدُونَ) – Those who are grateful and constantly praise Allah in all conditions.
4. (السَّائِحُونَ) –
One meaning: those who fast, because they abstain from food and drink.
Another meaning: those who travel for jihad or for the sake of Allah.
5. (الرَّاكِعُونَ)
6. (السَّاجِدُونَ) – These two emphasize those who are constant in prayer, particularly showing their humility in ruku‘ and sujūd.
7. (الآمِرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ) – Those who enjoin good, meaning: calling to tawḥīd, sunnah, and all forms of goodness.
8. (وَالنَّاهُونَ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ) – Those who forbid evil, such as shirk, bid‘ah, and every form of sin.
The “و” (wa) here is significant:
First explanation: The wa is for combining the qualities, showing that both enjoining good and forbidding evil together make the complete virtue.
Second explanation: This is the “wa thumāniyyah”, based on the Arab custom of listing seven items, and then adding “wa” before the eighth for emphasis.
9. (وَالْحَافِظُونَ لِحُدُودِ اللَّهِ) – Those who safeguard the boundaries of Allah, meaning they follow divine rulings properly.
This implies that all the previous qualities must be practiced within the limits of Shariah and Sunnah—not through innovation (bid‘ah).
10. (وَبَشِّرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ) – This indicates that without true faith (īmān), none of the previous qualities alone can lead to glad tidings or salvation.
Faith is the foundation upon which all other qualities are built.
