وَاعْلَمُوا 428 التوبة
وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتُ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ يَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَيُقِيمُونَ الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتُونَ الزَّكَاةَ وَيُطِيعُونَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ أُولَئِكَ سَيَرْحَمُهُمُ اللَّهُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ ﴿۷۱﴾ وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا وَمَسَاكِنَ طَيِّبَةً فِي جَنَّاتِ عَدْنٍ وَرِضْوَانٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ ذَلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ ﴿۷۲﴾ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ جَاهِدِ الْكُفَّارَ وَالْمُنَافِقِينَ وَاغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَمَأْوَاهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ ﴿۷۳﴾
﴾71﴿ Wal mu'minoona wal mu'minaatu ba'duhum awliyaaa'u ba'd; ya'muroona bilma'roofi wa yanhawna 'anil munkari wa yuqeemoonas Salaata wa yu'toonaz Zakaata wa yutee'oonal laaha wa Rasoolah; ulaaa'ika sayarhamu humul laah; innallaaha 'Azeezun Hakeem
﴾72﴿ Wa'adal laahulmu' mineena walmu'minaati Jannaatin tajree min tahtihal anhaaru khaalideena feehaa wa masaakina taiyibatan fee Jannnaati 'adn; wa ridwaanum minal laahi akbar; zaalika huwal fawzul 'azeem
﴾73﴿ Yaaa aiyuhan Nabiyyu jaahidil kuffaara walmunaafiqeena waghluz 'alaihim; wa maawaahum jahannnamu wa bi'sal maseer
﴾71﴿ And the believing men and the believing women are friends of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and they establish prayer, and they give zakat, and they obey Allah and His Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace These are the ones upon whom Allah will surely have mercy. Indeed, Allah is the Almighty, the Wise
﴾72﴿ Allah, the Exalted, has promised to the believing men and believing women Gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever And in pleasant places in lasting gardens, and the pleasure of Allah Almighty is a great blessing. This is the great success
﴾73﴿ O Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be harsh with them. Their abode is Hell, and evil is that destination
[71] In this verse, the qualities of the believers are mentioned in contrast to the hypocrites.
Note: Regarding the believers, the word "أَوْلِيَاء" (allies, protectors) is used, while for the hypocrites, the phrase "بَعْضُهُمْ مِنْ بَعْضٍ" was used.
This highlights a subtle point: the hearts of the believers are united in mutual love, whereas the hearts of the hypocrites are filled with discord toward one another, even though they appear united in their stance.
(بِالْمَعْرُوفِ) – Al-Sharbini said it refers to every kind of good and obedience recognized in the Shariah. At its core, this includes faith (iman), belief in the Oneness of Allah (tawhid), and adherence to the Sunnah.
(الْمُنْكَرِ) – refers to whatever is clearly condemned in the Shariah, including shirk (associating partners with Allah) and bid'ah (religious innovation).
(وَيُطِيعُونَ) – “and they obey” – this contrasts with "نَسُوا اللَّهَ" (they forgot Allah) mentioned about the hypocrites.
[72] In this verse, there is glad tidings of the Hereafter for the believers, in contrast to the punishment of the hypocrites.
(وَمَسَاكِنَ طَيِّبَةً) – refers to pure and delightful dwellings, meaning palaces made of pearls, rubies, and other precious materials.
They are filled with beautiful fragrance, and the scent spreads to a distance of five hundred (500) years.
These homes contain countless blessings and bounties.
[73] In this verse, the address is directed to the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace), but it also includes the believers.
Since the previous verse described the qualities and conditions of the disbelievers and hypocrites in contrast to the believers, this verse commands the declaration of jihad against all disbelievers—both with the sword and the tongue.
Jihad against hypocrites who have not migrated (i.e. are not openly with the believers) is also with the sword. However, if they reside in the land of Islam (Dār al-Islām), then the jihad against them is with the tongue (through preaching, refutation, etc.).
(وَاغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْ) – “and be harsh with them” – harshness here is the opposite of gentleness and refers to firmness of heart in dealings.
The meaning is: do not show softness or compassion to either group when confronting them, rather be firm and resolute.
This does not mean to curse or insult them, but rather to deal with them seriously and strongly in matters of truth.
