وَاعْلَمُوا 422 التوبة
قُلْ أَنْفِقُوا طَوْعًا أَوْ كَرْهًا لَنْ يُتَقَبَّلَ مِنْكُمْ إِنَّكُمْ كُنْتُمْ قَوْمًا فَاسِقِينَ ﴿۵۳﴾ وَمَا مَنَعَهُمْ أَنْ تُقْبَلَ مِنْهُمْ نَفَقَاتُهُمْ إِلَّا أَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا بِاللَّهِ وَبِرَسُولِهِ وَلَا يَأْتُونَ الصَّلَاةَ إِلَّا وَهُمْ كُسَالَى وَلَا يُنْفِقُونَ إِلَّا وَهُمْ كَارِهُونَ ﴿۵۴﴾ فَلَا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَالُهُمْ وَلَا أَوْلَادُهُمْ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ لِيُعَذِّبَهُمْ بِهَا فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَتَزْهَقَ أَنْفُسُهُمْ وَهُمْ كَافِرُونَ ﴿۵۵﴾ وَيَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ إِنَّهُمْ لَمِنْكُمْ وَمَا هُمْ مِنْكُمْ وَلَكِنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ يَفْرَقُونَ ﴿۵۶﴾ لَوْ يَجِدُونَ مَلْجَأً أَوْ مَغَارَاتٍ أَوْ مُدَّخَلًا لَوَلَّوْا إِلَيْهِ وَهُمْ يَجْمَحُونَ ﴿۵۷﴾
﴾53﴿ Qul anfiqoo taw'an aw karhal lany yutaqabbala min kum innakum kuntum qawman faasiqeen
﴾54﴿ Wa maa mana'ahum 'an tuqbala minhum nafaqaatuhum illaaa annahum kafaroo billaahi wa bi Rasoolihee wa laa ya'toonas Salaata illaa wa hum kusaalaa wa laa yunfiqoona illaa wa hum kaarihoon
﴾55﴿ Falaa tu'jibka amwaaluhum wa laaa awlaaduhum; innamaa yureedul laahu liyu'az zibahum bihaa fil hayaatid dunyaa wa tazhaqa anfusuhum wa hum kaafiroon
﴾56﴿ Wa yahlifoona billaahi innnahum laminkum wa maa hum minkum wa laakinnahum qawmuny yafraqoon
﴾57﴿ Law yajidoona malja'an aw maghaaraatin aw mudda khalal lawallaw ilaihi wa hum yajmahoon
﴾53﴿ Say, Spend, willingly or unwillingly, it will never be accepted from you. Indeed, you are a rebellious people
﴾54﴿ And nothing prevented their charity from being accepted from them except that they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger And they do not come to prayer except when they are lazy, and they do not spend except when they know it as bad
﴾55﴿ So let not their wealth or their children surprise you. It is only what Allah Almighty wills (Because of their abundance of wealth and children) That He may punish them for it in the life of this world, and that their souls may depart while they are disbelievers
﴾56﴿ And they swear by Allah, the Most High, that they are indeed among you While they are not of your group, but they are a people who fear
﴾57﴿ If they found a place of refuge, or a cave, or a hole, they would go to it while they were running
[53] In this verse as well, two evil traits of the hypocrites are mentioned.
(anfiqū) – This command is actually in the meaning of a statement (khabar), meaning: whether they spend or not, neither type of spending is accepted—the outcome is the same.
This verse proves that righteous deeds are nullified by disbelief and hypocrisy.
(fāsiqīn) – The intended meaning of fisq here is doctrinal fisq, i.e., disbelief (kufr).
[54] This verse is a detailed explanation of the fisq (corruption) that prevents the acceptance of their charitable spending (nafaqāt).
In this verse, three of their evil traits are mentioned: they do not have true faith, and they do not perform physical or financial acts of worship with sincerity as acts of worship.
[55] Since the previous verse mentioned that their charitable spending (nafaqāt) is not accepted, this verse adds emphasis with the particle fā’ (فـ), stating that their wealth is of no benefit to them—no reward is attained through it.
Likewise, their children are also of no benefit; rather, both their wealth and children become a cause of punishment for them.
On the other hand, when a believer possesses wealth, the hardship and trials that come with it lead to reward—so for him, it is not a punishment.
[56] This verse also contains a warning to the hypocrites and mentions two of their evil traits.
After the signs of their disbelief were exposed, they began making false oaths to deceive the believers, claiming: “We are not with the disbelievers; rather, we are with you.”
After (wa lākinna-hum), a hidden phrase is implied: yuzhirūna ilaykum al-īmān—meaning, they outwardly display faith due to fear.
(yafraqūn) comes from farq, which refers to a kind of fear mixed with panic and awe—this denotes an intense fear.
The meaning of yafraqūn here is that they are afraid their hypocrisy may be exposed, and the Muslims might kill them as a result.
[57] This is also a punishment for the hypocrites and an expression of their fear, and within it is a reprehensible trait.
(مَلْجَأً) means a refuge, like fortresses.
(مَغَارَاتٍ) are caves that exist in the mountains.
(مُدَّخَلًا) refers to holes in the ground.
(يَجْمَحُونَ) is derived from the running of a horse that does not stop even with a bridle.
