وَإِذَا سَمِعُوا 281 الأنعام
لِكُلِّ نَبَإٍ مُسْتَقَرٌّ وَسَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ ﴿۶۷﴾ وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ الَّذِينَ يَخُوضُونَ فِي آيَاتِنَا فَأَعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ حَتَّى يَخُوضُوا فِي حَدِيثٍ غَيْرِهِ وَإِمَّا يُنْسِيَنَّكَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَلَا تَقْعُدْ بَعْدَ الذِّكْرَى مَعَ الْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ ﴿۶۸﴾ وَمَا عَلَى الَّذِينَ يَتَّقُونَ مِنْ حِسَابِهِمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ وَلَكِنْ ذِكْرَى لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ ﴿۶۹﴾
﴾67﴿ Likulli naba im mustaqar runw wa sawfa ta'lamoon
﴾68﴿ Wa izaa ra aital lazeena yakhoodoona feee Aayaatinaa fa a'rid 'anhum hattaa yakkhoodoo fee hadeesin ghairih; wa immaa yunsiyannakash Shaitaanu falaa taq'ud ba'dazzikraa ma'al qawmiz zaalimeen
﴾69﴿ Wa maa 'alal lazeena yattaqoona min hisaabihim min shai'inw wa laakin zikraa la'allahum yattaqoon
﴾67﴿ There is a time for every news and you should know soon
﴾68﴿ And when you see those who talk (inappropriately) in Our verses, then turn away from them, as long as they become busy talking about something else and if Shaytan makes you forget, So stay away after remembering from the people of the wrongdoers
﴾69﴿ And there is nothing on their account for those who keep themselves (from polytheism) But it is to give advice so that they may be saved
[67] This is the answer to the question: "They deny, so why does the punishment not befall them?"
The answer is: Because there is an appointed time for it.
(نَبَإٍ) — Refers to any significant news found in the Qur'an, whether about punishment in this world or the Hereafter—or it can refer generally to all messages of the Qur'an.
[68] This verse teaches proper etiquette: when sinful or heretical speech is spoken in a gathering, it is prohibited to sit and participate in that gathering—except if one goes solely to advise and correct them.
The connection to the previous verses is that it was mentioned earlier that those deserving punishment are so because of denial, especially when denial is paired with mockery and ridicule.
Now, the verse describes the state of such people.
Among the deniers, there are two types:
1. Those who mock and ridicule.
2. Those who consider religion as play and amusement.
This verse refers to the first group, and verse 70 mentions the second.
(وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ) — Ruyyah (seeing) refers both to physical sight and to knowledge/awareness, making it general.
(الَّذِينَ يَخُوضُونَ) — Khawd in language originally means entering into water (diving in), but it is also used metaphorically for becoming involved in vain speech or meaningless activities.
Another interpretation is that khawd means to mix or corrupt things.
Al-Qurtubi narrates from Mujahid that it refers to those who mock the Qur'an.
(فِي آيَاتِنَا) — This refers to the Qur'an and, by extension, all rulings and religious matters.
(حَتَّى يَخُوضُوا فِي حَدِيثٍ غَيْرِهِ) — The pronoun refers back to the aforementioned ayat, meaning until they engage in a conversation that does not include mockery, ridicule, distortions, or misinterpretations of the Qur'an and religion.
A similar command regarding khawd and avoidance is also mentioned in verse 140 of Surah An-Nisa.
(وَإِمَّا يُنْسِيَنَّكَ الشَّيْطَانُ) — Meaning, if Satan causes you to forget acting upon this command (i.e., fa-a‘rid wa la taq‘ud—"turn away and do not sit with them").
This serves as proof that forgetfulness (nisyān) is possible for the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace).
Al-Qurtubi discusses the scholarly differences on this issue.
(بَعْدَ الذِّكْرَى) — Dhikra here means either remembering Allah’s ruling after initially forgetting, or it refers to the act of giving advice and forbidding them from mocking the verses.
[69] This verse is also connected to the previous one, emphasizing that it is the duty of the believers to convey the message and offer advice, especially when they are compelled to be present in such gatherings.
There are two interpretations of this verse:
1. The disbelievers come to your gatherings and begin mockery and vain speech (khawd), so you are not held accountable for their actions.
2. The meaning of (يَتَّقُونَ) is that the believers should protect themselves by avoiding participation in their gatherings.
Therefore, the believers will not be held accountable for the actions of the polytheists—their only responsibility is to remind and advise them.
